Hyvää uutta vuotta ystävät! Puutarha avautuu jälleen huomenna keskiviikkona 4.1. Olemme avoinna TI - PE klo 12 - 19 ja lauantaisin luksusaamiaisen merkeissä klo 10 ja 12. Tervetuloa!
Ensi perjantaina (loppiaisena) ja lauantaina Puutarha on suljettu. Pidämme siis pitkän viikonlopun ja luksusaamiaiset alkavat jälleen 14.1.

Matkalla pohjoiseen täytyy aina pysähtyä puolivälin etapissa Kuopion Kanelissa http://www.kahvilakaneli.net/ (Kanelipullan tuoksuiset terveiset Sarille Joensuuhun...). Kuvassa kaksi voipunutta matkaajaa rentoutumassa parven sohvalla.

Kanelista löytyi myös kiva kassi Oivalle, joka oli nelisen kiloa pienempi vielä kesäkuussa ja mahtui sinne vaivatta.

Voi miten onnellisena lähdin perjantaina Puutarhalta. Sali oli täynnä iloista väkeä ja leppoisaa tunnelmaa. Tapasin jälleen pariskunnan, joka oli tullut Puutarhalle viikko sitten ensimmäistä kertaa, ja he kertoivat lähteneensä meiltä eri ihmisinä kuin olivat tulleet. Heillä on kolme lasta ja kiireinen arki, ja visiitti Puutarhassa oli ollut kuulemma kuin ulkomaanmatka tai pieni loma keskellä arkea. Tämä on juuri sitä, mitä toivoin voivani tarjota; irtioton arjesta, hyvää mieltä, hyvää ruokaa ja rentoutumista.

Keittiössä on kokeiltu villisti eri variaatioita pullasta ja salin kiitoksista päätellen täydellisen pullan resepti on syntynyt. Yllättäen herkullisin pulla on myös täysin vegaani; tehty vaniljaiseen soijamaitoon, luomujauhoin ja luomupalmusokerilla.

Lauantaina kahvilalla vieraili sisustuskirjoja tekevän Edition Paumesin väkeä. Viimeksi Suomessa vieraillessaan heidän oli tarkoitus kuvata myös Puutarhalla, mutta olimme juuri vajoamassa taloyhtiömme vesivahinkoremontin syövereihin. Tällä kertaa tunnelma oli leppoisampi ja luksusaamiainen maistui terassilla.

Paumesin vierailun hedelmiä saa varmaan pian ihailla hyvinvarustetuissa kirjakaupoissa; viimekeväisen matkan tulos on jo myytävänä ainakin heidän omassa nettikaupassaan

Luksusaamiaisella oli vilinää ja onnellisia asiakkaita - ihana päivä - viikon takaiskut haihtuivat tyystin mielestä.

Luksusaamiaisella tarjottiin Mannerheimin drinkki.

(Helenan reseptillä seuraavasti:

- Sangollinen mustaviinimarjan lehtiä

- Sangollinen vettä

- 500 gr sokeria

- 50 gr sitruunahappoa (apteekista)

Kerätään lehdet. Sokeri liuotetaan veteen. Osan vedestä voi kuumentaa, jotta sokeri sulaa helpommin. Sitruunahappo lisätään veteen. Vesi kaadetaan lehtien päälle. Annetaan tekeytyä huoneenlämmössä kaksi päivää. Nautitaan siivilöitynä. Jos tekee isomman satsin, voi juoman pullottaa hyvin desinfioituihin pulloihin. Meillä on pari takahyllylle unohtunutta pulloa säilynyt kellarissa raikkaina seuraavaankin kesään.)

Olen viime aikoina tullut joka päivä aina uutta ylimääräistä tuntia aikaisemmin töihin siltä varalta, että jotakin yllättävää sattuu. Nämä päivät ovat kuitenkin lyöneet kaikki odotukset. Milloin tulevat ne ihanan rauhalliset, yllätyksettömät työpäivät? Missä niitä jemmataan?

Tänään jouduimme pistämään koko putiikin kiinni jääkaapin sanottua työsopimuksensa irti. Onneksi ihanan Resta Mestan ♥Seppo♥ pelasti meidät jälleen valoa nopeammin; uusi jääkaapin järkäle puhisee jo keittiössä valmiina palvelemaan teitä. Se on tosi hieno ja paljon vanhaa tilavampi. Valitettavasti tämä tarkoitti sitä, että se on myös ISOMPI: jouduimme purkamaan koko keittiön ja pelaamaan tetristä kylmälaitteilla... Huomenna perjantaina joudumme pitämään vielä ovet kiinni. Lauantai on sitten luksusaamiaispäivä ja kahvila taas auki normaaliin tapaan tiistaina 23.8. klo 12-18.

Kauhujen päivän kruunasi asiakasreklamaatio lasinsirpaleesta take away -salaatissa! Herranjumala, miten säikähdimme! Jälkikäteen katastrofiin perehdyttyämme totesimme tuon lasin suorastaan suussasulavaksi, eli suolaksi. Sitä saa nykyisin niin monenmuotoisena ja kokoisena... ei ollut kyllä tarkoitus pelästyttää sen kummemmin asiakkaita kuin itseämmekään.

Meet Jonathan.

One day, while we were discussing a food related emergency, Jonathan walked into the cafe wearing a T-shirt with a picture of an ambulance on it. Bingo.

Now Jonathan is our new keittiömestari' - our 'Gastronomy Farmer'. He's from the Emerald Isle, the land of Leprechauns, where so many other Irish men come from. Unlike most Irish he's pretty handy with a spatula. He found his calling while in France, where a chef de cuisine called Freddy Coupeau took note of his abilities and polished up this rough diamond. Many years and many kitchens later he's now in our kitchen.

Be sure to sample his soups, salads or signature sandwich the next time you stop by!

Summer State of Mind

Yesterday we hosted the confirmation reception of a very handsome young man and it was a really wonderful event with great guests, speeches and even live violin music! After the event we did a little bit of organizing to give the cafe a new Summer look.

We also kicked off our easy-going Summer cafe opening hours, Tuesday to Friday open 10am until 4pm and on Saturdays we will still serve our deluxe brunch but be sure to reserve your table in advance!

Unfortunately my camera broke about a week ago, and mobile phone picture quality just isn't up to the standard I'd like to keep (as you can tell from the photo above!), so like our little cafe also our little blog will hibernate over the following Summer months. So stop reading and go outside and enjoy the light and sun :)

Enjoy an evening of diverse ethnic culture and music this Friday (tomorrow!) with Smalltribe as they perform songs at the cafe in French, Spanish and English. Smalltribe is a duo composed by Yovan Nagwetch (Native French Canadian) & Carlos Alexis (Nicaraguan) who play native folk & light acoustic rock music. They sing about the life of their people as well as the reality of their countries.

Kallio is blooming with activities once again for the Kallio Kukkii festival which kick starts tomorrow! Playtime for Smalltribe will be at about 7pm so come sit down for a cup of your choice of refreshment and enjoy :)

Yesterday a very talkative little girl at the cafe told me her favorite number is seven even though she's turning six in just a few days. Turns out we have the same birthday but I didn't dare tell her I'm happy to be dropping off the number 7 from my age because I much prefer the number 8.

She drew her family in our guest book and decided she's almost 6 years old so it's OK for her to write that she's 6yrs. I hope you have a great party and despite your worries, I'm sure your jeans will still fit tomorrow, even though you'll be older then :)

Thomas has been extremely busy working at the cafe and heading to rehearsals for the past few months so it will be great to see the final product. Shows run until the 2nd of May, go see!

Ever notice a funny looking plant with a long stem and several luscious leaves at the tippy top? It's an avocado tree (maybe 'tree' is a slight overstatement at this stage!) which we got as a gift from a wonderful friend. She planted the avocado seed herself, and now we've been watching it grow :)

Maybe we will have avocados this summer? ;)

One little bit of info for all you tea drinkers: New tea blends arrived yesterday incl. Ginger Breeze herbal infusion and Strawberry Cream Rooibos and now we have plenty in stock of our old favorites eg Sweet Rosie O'Grady! Nothing like a steaming cup of tea on a rainy day eh? :)

We have reorganised our shop to accommodate all of the new amazing little things that have arrived! An artist from Lappeenranta has made some amazingly beautiful and nostalgic hand-made cards, boxes, pendants, pouches, decorations... there are so many pretty things! Those pretty things include Easter themed cards, egg-shaped boxes (so you can hide your very own treat inside!) and decorations. Come see and adore!

Our amazing French house band, the spectacular duo, our beloved Ottilie have returned to the North! And they will of course stop by the cafe to entertain us for an intimate acoustic gig! So mark the 25th Thursday in your calendars and come let their music take you to where-ever it is it will take you (far away, into some nice, magical place). Playtime is at five p.m! Happy Onneli Creatures

The Garden has new guests! They are Onneli creatures and they are oh so hugable! They've spent this week exploring the cafe, we could hardly keep up! But now they've relaxed and really made themselves at home. Let me introduce some of them to you!

This proud kitty is named Helmi. She insisted on posing next to the sign that says "I'm in the Garden", which I must agree was a good idea!

This is Ms. Emilia, daydreaming on the couch. I wish I had a dress like hers!

Onerva, the cat who loves to travel and Sulho the smiling rabbit had a bit of tea this afternoon. Sulho prefers his tea just as it is, Onerva takes two sugars and cream in her tea.

This is Hilkka Annikki. She loves to dance, but here she's taking a well deserved rest, she had quite a bit of cake right before I took this picture!

All of the Onneli creature wanted me to tell you that you can come visit them at the cafe, you can even take them home with you! Imagine that! So do come say hello :)

Our shop is open!

From our shop corner you can find pretty little things from e.g. I Made This, Merry Go Round, You Complete Me and PuroPuro to name a few. Many of the products are one of a kind & unique, so once they're sold another exact replica will not appear in our shop again. We also still have a few cds from our French house band Ottilie left! This time Thomas learnt that you must always look your best when at the cafe - because you never know when a photographer and journalist ambush will take place ;) An article prompting Swedish cruise visitors to explore areas outside the core center of the city will appear in a Swedish newspaper and they chose to recommend us to their readers. Great! Tack tack och vällkommen på kaffee i Villipuutarha.. :D (I don't speak a word of Swedish :(.. )

I think the previous ambush article about our beloved Kallio should be published this weekend? Will have to go browse the papers tomorrow after work... and buy all the copies if the picture makes me feel more like a toad than a flower ;) <-- last remark written to match picture to the text haha

Occasionally Problematic Phone..

We are working on developing a properly functioning system for taking table reservations.. at present how it works is that one of us carries the cafe phone and reservation book along with us where ever we go. This picture was taken last week when Katja, Anu and myself went for a walk around Töölö bay and we had to stop to take down a reservation - I'm just happy I had Katja there to hold the book for me, it can get a bit clumsy when I'm on the move on my own and the phone begins to ring... ;)

Monday Blues Be Gone!

Starting right now the cafe will be open on every weekday of the week - even on Mondays - from seven in the morning until eight in the evening.

Come grab your morning coffee and try out our new breakfast muffins! During the first few days to weeks we will be testing out different kinds of breakfast porridge, self-made muesli combos, breakfast smoothies and so on.. come taste and give us your opinions! FEW played Friday night and it was spectacularly beautiful.

Hans and his guitar also visited on Thursday evening.

I just came home from the café where I was finishing off some paper work and Anna-Kaisa was finishing off the evening clean-up for the day when I happened to notice something quite peculiar in our postbox...

A package? How fun! Who could it be for?

"That's us!" we exclaimed and blushed after a moment of surprise. But who's it from? Why? Iih!

Inside we saw pink paper and a card.. "Those cupcake cups.. I recognise those cupcake cups!"

Wrapped inside the pink paper we found...

Aprons!! We were sent aprons as a thank you for the KappAhl Vintage Stories event we hosted last week! We are both extremely touched and happy about our gift. Thank you! :)

Nike was kind enough to lend her beautiful figure for a picture as I was not wearing pretty enough clothes to match the aprons and Anna-Kaisa had already put on her winter coat, but I am sure you will see these prized aprons worn by us at the cafe in the future!

Our present was definitely the cherry on top of our day today :)

ps. I have to admit these pictures were reconstructed - no way were we going to stop to take pictures while actually opening the package! :D

Picture Perfect Reflection

I was at the café yesterday morning doing some paperwork when in walk a journalist and photographer. It's always great when they do that of course, and I really enjoy giving interviews.. but I must confess I get a little self-conscious when it comes to posing in their photographs without prior warning - in other words without being styled up by Katja in advance!

The kind photographer insisted he was good at what he does, although I am not entirely convinced his talent will compensate for my hardly brushed hair and barely-there makeup. In any case, from now on I will have to do my best to look my best, just in case.. you never know when photographers attack!

The topic of their article was close to my heart however: Kallio. I love living in Kallio and it was a pleasure to give them my opinion on the matter!

The article will be published in about two weeks and I will post about it again then. Fingers crossed they decide to use pictures of our cafe instead of me.

Lovely Lace

One of our regular customers and friend Rinna Saramäki (together with Emmi Jormalainen and Riina Honkimäki) celebrated the publication of their new book Pitsikirja yesterday at the café.

It is a gorgeous book full of traditional & modern ideas and techniques for creating lovely lace. Lace after all does not protect you from the cold or cover you up, it's only purpose is to look beautiful<3

Sunday Chili Chocolate Anticipation

It was a cold day today, so it was great that so many of you braved the icy winds and dropped by the cafe! Our coffee, tea and hot chocolate seemed steamier and hotter than usual too!

I noticed a customer hum along to the music today, and he seemed to catch himself doing it, as if he didn't intend to be humming. He seemed pleased and happy and it's great to notice these little things.. reminds us that we're not just there to pour coffee, but to make you happy, which again, makes us happy :)

Tomorrow we will keep the cafe open for the last time on a Sunday. Katja prepared some lovely vegetarian pies (she named them sacred pies!) and we will spice up our hot chocolate drink (made from real chocolate) with a hint of chili. So do drop by and treat yourself to something delicious!

Yesterday we had a beautiful event at the cafe for KappAhl and the launch of their Spring 2010 Vintage Stories collection. Anna-Kaisa and I got to play dress-up (with clothes from the collection, naturally) and it was such a fun event to be a part of! Here is Anna-Kaisa posing with a cute little cupcake :)

I didn't take too many pictures so luckily there were a whole bunch of ladies at the event who like to blog, so in the meanwhile you can check out their gorgeous pictures;

Happy Valentines Day

I have scheduled this post, because on Valentines day I will be having breakfast with some of my closest friends, later in the day we plan on going sledding because it also happens to be Laskiaissunnuntai (don't ask me to translate...sledding Sunday?) So I will be nowhere near a computer on this Sunday. Perhaps I will also let out a tiger's roar in honour of the Chinese New Year? A lot happening on this day, indeed!

So our new opening hours are;
Tue-Fri 11-20

Saturdays are reserved for our deluxe breakfast and you can reserve a table for you and your best friends for either the 10:00 or 12:00 seating at our number 044-021 6404.

And in just a few weeks we have another announcement to make regarding opening hours .. but I will wait for it to be current until I announce it :)

Philosophy over a hot cup...

Philosophy cafe will be held again today at 18:30, which means that we will lock the door after 18:30 so that the philosophers can converse and drink their brew without interruptions. The evenings are open to all and free of charge - they are held in Finnish. If you're interested in joining just show up and be on time, the topics are decided by the group in the beginning of each session. Welcome!

The next Philosophy Tuesdays will be on 9.3 and 6.4.

We've been on holiday! I took a complete break from everything related to the cafe. Sari and I traveled to a land of mangoes, monkeys and mamak stalls while Katja and her family visited the land of windmills and wooden shoes! ;)

It was great to be back at work last week and catch up with some of you! Hopefully everyone else got to unwind during the winter holidays. We have new treats for you all, including a traditional "potato cake" (perunaleivos), which to my surprise has no potato in it - only more chocolate and richness than I care to think about..mmm :)

Arla Sauna

After we introduced our Sunday opening hours Sunday Sauna at Arla quickly became a tradition of ours. There is no place I would rather be after a long week of work than at our next door neighbour public sauna Arla.

Arla has served and washed the people of Helsinki since the late 1920s and with the well-perserved deocr of the facilities all of your senses can experience the history of our city. The shower room and massive sauna stove are both rustic and beautiful as well as mildly creepy and, well historical, all at the same time. The ceiling of the sauna room is tainted black and all work-related thoughts vanish while you find different images, shapes and figures in the ceiling..

History aside, at the end of the day you always go home feeling cleaner, softer and more relaxed than you have since (in our case) the week before when we last visited :)

First let me tell you about something past... Ottilie. Ottilie, oh Ottilie! (time to stop the itlalics "whispering"!) What an amazing French duet! I could not believe my luck when they agreed to play at the café during their short stay in Finland. It was exhilarating to experience their talent in such an intimate space under candlelight. Do not forget their name, Ottilie, as they are now our official French houseband and I will let you know when they return to Finland early next year! Merci beaucoup! Ooh lala! Pupupidu!

And next to the forth-coming... ! Kallio will be happening during the next few weeks as the annual Kallio Kipinöi festival kicks off this Friday. At the cafe our very own Katja will be hosting the opening of her art show which will be on display during the entire festival! Also on Friday there will be Niina Sillanpää performing as Hannibal at 19 (see pic) and a Kallio based acoustic cover band Tissit will entertain you at 20 (no pic unfortunately ;)).

On Sunday acoustic guitarists will play at Arla sauna and at the cafe and the following week on the 25th poets Kati Neuvonen and Anu Korvenniemi will perform via a dialog of poems. I have no idea what poem dialogging is but I'm sure it's something I don't want to miss!

Last but not least, we will be celebrating Villipuutarha's one year birthday this Wednesday so please stop by and celebrate with us!

Starting tomorrow we will be spoiling you with delicious vegetarian soups from 11-15 every weekday! Lunch time soup meals include a cup of our dark-roast coffee or tea, served with a piece of Petri Sirén's smoked salt dark chocolate - sounds quirky but it is exquisite.

Kiima-levyt @ our shop!

Ever notice that our little cafe is also a little shop? Thus far almost all of our furniture, chandelier and little decorative items have been for sale, although not specifically marked as for-sale items. During the next few weeks and months we will be significantly adding items to our shop and I will be presenting them here on our blog.

And here's my first little intro!

Last week a stack of cds from Kiima-levyt appeared in our shop. Kiima-levyt is a small independent record company which aims to increase the well-being of our community with high-quality music, which is an objective we can relate to! Each record can be yours for the price of 18 euro. If you want to know more about a specific album ask Nina or anyone else working at the time. If you want to listen to the cd before buying we can play a few tracks for you at the cafe. Happy listening!

Vegan chocolate!

Chocolates have arrived! In addition to some of the favorites we have three new flavours - including VEGAN chocolates! Come taste Petri Sirén's vegan chili chocolate or (and :)) his vegan coconut cream chocolate - delicious!

As an end of summer special we've been giving away sun flowers to our customers this week. We only had four left when I left the cafe today, so the last ones will go pretty fast tomorrow I suspect!

With the end of the summer season at Villipuutarha we are re-introducing lunch time soups to our menu, will update you more on Monday! Stay tuned!

Holiday, Celebrate

We're going on a little vacation next week, so our wild cafe will be closed from the 17th until the 23rd on August and we will be back from Tuesday 24.8 onwards.

btw we are now open longer on weekends! Early birds can enjoy our deluxe breakfast now from 9am and we will stay open until 4pm (so you can still sleep in late and come in for breakfast, which we will prepare up to as late as 3:30pm).

The blog has been on a lil bit of a summer vacation it seems! Nothing like updating it a bit on a rainy Monday afternoon - and we will get back to updating more frequently again, we promise :)

Even though I spend a lot of time at the cafe, sometimes even I notice funny little things... like yesterday when my friends Amppu and Ru and I sat down for our Sunday deluxe breakfast I noticed a funny reflection in my cup of coffee....

Amppu came up with the name of the picture (which I stole for the title of this post). Have you captured any funny little details at the cafe lately?

T.i.l.a visited Kallio

Villipuutarha and other shops in Kallio were featured on this weeks episode of the T.i.l.a show! If you missed it you can watch it here or catch the rerun on MTV3 this Sunday!

In other news: We now have several new "gardeners" for the summer months! Which is great news because it means that we will be able to stay open six days a week, Tuesday through to Sunday! Our deluxe breakfast is now available twice a week!

We also have a new summer menu including refreshing gazpacho soups served with sandwiches or quiches for you to explore - both healthy and delicious :)
